Dedicated to enhancing vocal health and performance

Vision and mission

Our approach to vocal health

Here at Bristol Voice Care, we believe in a holistic, person-centred approach to vocal health. The health of our voices is directly connected to the strength and vitality of our bodies and minds. We use a biopsychosocial philosophy of care, meaning that your overall physical health, mental wellbeing and personal circumstances are considered when supporting you on your vocal journey.

We provide a safe and supportive space for you to explore your vocal needs and ambitions. We value your knowledge and experience as the expert on your own voice. Our role is to facilitate your journey of vocal rediscovery, with an emphasis on judgment-free listening and respect.

With expertise in a range of personalised, holistic strategies we provide bespoke programmes of rehabilitation and training. Our work is supported by several professional memberships and affiliations, providing access to the most up-to-date research and best-practice in voice care. We are proud to be part of the voice care centre referral network, ensuring you have access to a multidiscipline team of specialists should the need arise.

Performance
I have always loved to sing and have been nurtured and supported by many wonderful teachers and coaches. I am lucky to enjoy a varied musical life performing as a soloist in concert, oratorio, recital and increasingly on the opera stage. As a choral singer I have worked with groups big and small, performing both in the UK and internationally. My media work includes session recording, and broadcasting for Radio & Television and I always enjoy collaborating with artists across all creative disciplines to present immersive arts experiences. I continue to work regularly as a soloist in concert and oratorio across the UK and as a consort singer in the South West of England.

Experience, Qualifications and Research
I began my musical career at Bristol Cathedral, as the Dean’s Chorister and a music scholar at The Cathedral School. I was awarded a scholarship to study vocal performance at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and later went on to read Theology at Cambridge University where I also sang as a choral scholar in the choir of Gonville and Caius College. I went on to train as a Secondary School teacher and was later a postgraduate student at Oxford University researching inclusive education. I have an MA in voice pedagogy from the Voice Study Centre and University of Wales Trinity St David, where my research focused on exploring the use of imagery in voice rehabilitation. I am continuing this research on a PhD at University College London under the supervision of Professor Graham Welch and Professor Evangelos Himonides.

As an early career researcher, I present my work at a variety of UK and International conferences, including The International Congress of Voice Teachers, The International Symposium of Performance Science, The National Symposium of Singing, The London Conference of Critical Thought (organising committee), Conference of Body Music and Mind, The Vocal Health Education Conference, The International Symposium on Teaching Singing, The European Association of Music in Schools, and The Association of Teachers of Singing (South West Area Representative).

I have written numerous articles for publication, including for peer review in The Journal of Voice, Voice And Speech Review, Australian Voice, and Frontiers. I continue to be fascinated by the human voice and love exploring its possibilities with clients and in research.

Voice Rehabilitation, Coaching and Mentoring
As well as individual and choral teaching and coaching, I offer consultancy on inclusive education working with Vocal health Education to produce their certificate of inclusive practice. Having worked as a professional tutor on PGCE courses with Bristol University, Bath Spa University, Bath University, The University of the West of England and the Open University, I now work as a tutor and lecturer providing teacher training and coaching, professional development courses, and inclusive music education consultancy. This includes as a professional mentor on the ESTA/University of Chichester PGcert in vocal teaching. In recognition of my educational work, I have become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

I continue to combine professional performance engagements with a thriving private practice as a vocal health specialist. I provide vocal rehabilitation, vocal manual therapy (also known as laryngeal massage) teaching and coaching for professional and amateur singers, actors and public speakers. I run choral workshops with a focus on healthy vocal performance and am a conductor at Bristol Youth Choir and resident vocal coach for Exultate Singers. I also provide coaching and mentoring for conductors on how they can work with and support singers in their groups. As well as private clients, I am experienced working in a clinical setting as a vocal health specialist singing teacher (Bristol Children’s Hospital) and voice rehabilitation specialist within multidisciplinary voice clinics.

Anupa Paul - Music performance anxiety coach

Name

Anupa is a voice and performance coach who works online with clients in the UK. Based in Germany, she works with singers and other professional voice users through 1:1 coaching and group workshops to improve their vocal skills and mindset techniques so that they can go on to perform freely and express themselves clearly. In particular, she is passionate about working with singers who are recovering from a vocal injury or illness, so that they feel mentally and emotionally ready to begin performing again.

Anupa completed her M.A in Voice Pedagogy with the Voice Study Center and UWTSD in 2022. Her topics of independent research included Skill Acquisition in Singers, Development of Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) in Singers and the use of Acceptance and Commitment Coaching for MPA in adolescent singers.

With 14 years of teaching experience, Anupa understands that it is not enough to learn just technical skills in singing in order to perform before an audience. Symptoms of anxiety, uncomfortable emotions and other thoughts can disturb our technique, despite long hours of hard work and practice. While it is impossible to predict our personal and professional performing lives, developing mental and emotional resilience can provide the tools to cope in a way that helps us continue doing the things we love and are passionate about.

Jo Reader - Psychotherapist and body acceptance coach

Name

Jo Reader is an experienced BACP accredited psychotherapist and clinical supervisor following a first degree and career in music teaching and a lifelong love of singing! Jo welcomes any issues clients want to bring to therapy, but also specialises in 1:1 therapeutic coaching in radical body acceptance and delivers group workshops to professionals about their own unconscious body bias. Alongside her private practice, she has spent the past twenty years researching and writing about Fat Oppression and observes how it affects everyone, not just those in bigger bodies. As a result, she is passionate about freeing clients of the trauma of body hatred towards peace and self-acceptance. You go everywhere with your body: it is ever present in everything you do, so if you have any body insecurities it will be taking brain space, energy and emotion away from you focussing on all the wonders of your voice!

“I originally trained as a singer at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and worked professionally as a singer and actress before later training as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2012 gaining an MSc in Speech and Language Sciences from UCL. My background as a performer means I have always had a special interest in working with professional voice users who are experiencing voice difficulties.”

“Over the last year through our work together my vocal confidence, technique and ability has totally shifted. I couldn’t have expected to feel in such a strong place to be able to perform 2 and 3 show days for an extended period.”
